ELKO COUNTY was created on March 5, 1869. COUNTY SEAT: Elko - incorporated March 4, 1917. ORIGIN OF NAME: The origin of the name of Elko remains a matter of speculation.  It is rumored that Charles Crocker (Central Pacific Railroad) name it Elko because of the wild elk in the area.
