Click to view Calico Vista area. http://ccsd.net/meta/IAct/calicoVista.rm The first stop on the Red Rock Canyon scenic drive is Calico Vista I where petrified sand dunes dating back 125 million years ago can be viewed.   Weathering has exposed the layering of the ancient sand dune deposits. The striations, or lines, give evidence of the wind direction as the dunes were forming.  The red, tan, and pink colored sandstone, caused by oxidation of iron, gives the canyon its name.
