The Sandstone Quarry area has been used for thousands of years by American Indians and pioneers.  American Indians used this area for gathering and preparing food.  They left behind evidence in the form of agave roasting pits.

Sandstone Quarry was an active sandstone quarry from 1900 to 1912.  It provided hard sandstone for building material to places as far away as Los Angeles and San Francisco.  Sandstone was moved by a special tractor from the quarry into Las Vegas.  Once in Las Vegas, the sandstone was then sent on to other destinations by the railroad.   It was closed down in 1912 because the quarry was too far from the Las Vegas railway system.  Remnants of the quarried sandstone are still visible.

Today this area is used by the public for hiking, mountain climbing and sightseeing.   This is also the trail head for Calico Tanks and Turtle Head Peak.  Calico Tanks is a three mile hike to a natural water basin.  Turtle Head Peak (named so because it looks like the head of Nevada's desert tortoise) is a strenuous five mile hike up to the top of a gray mountain.  You  can see Big Horn Sheep, on occasion, as well as other wildlife along the trail.
