Our highly regarded environmental education program at Lake Mead National Recreation Area (NRA) introduces students to the Mojave Desert. Established in 1991, the education program has evolved into one that enhances and supports subjects being taught in the Clark County School District, and the surrounding school districts in Arizona and California. During the 2003-2004 school year we reached 10,890 students and adults through our Environmental Education programs.

We link subjects in science and history to our park’s natural and cultural themes. Our programs incorporate hands-on experience and inquiry to facilitate connections between the Mojave Desert and the students. We focus primarily on grades 1-5 and utilize ranger and teacher led field trips. Because of the high demand for these programs, scheduling priority is given to teachers who have completed our 16 hour workshop.

We also offer, in partnership with the National Park Service concessioner, Lake Mead Cruises, a “floating classroom” for grades 3-5 on board the Desert Princess Too tour boat. This unique program is scheduled on a first-come, first served basis throghout the year. There is a cost for each person.

We are seeking opportunities to expand our current education program into the middle and high schools. We welcome all grade level teachers to our workshops which are held throughout the year.
