CENTENNIAL LAS VEGAS (2 trunks available)
Created to commemorate the Centennial, this trunk takes students through the century from high button shoes and a glass milk bottle to a Viewmaster and a miniature F-14. The past comes alive through books with pictures spanning the century, a video history, and a Power Point CD of historic photographs to accompany a unique story of children’s life in Las Vegas in the early days.
WOMEN IN NEVADA 1850-1920 (3 trunks available)
Print materials, artifacts and reproductions tell the stories of four Nevada women: a Tonapah resident, a prospector's wife, a Northern Paiute woman, and a Carson Valley ranch woman. Pictures and brief biographies of other women important to Nevada's history include Las Vegas pioneer Helen Stewart and Indian rights campaigner Sarah Winnemucca. In the trunk: washboard, cast iron pot, candle mold, wool carding paddles, rabbit skin, miniature burden basket, Montgomery Ward 1895 catalog, 19th century Nevada photographs.
Pioneer Children 1850-1920 (4 trunks available)
This trunk of authentic reproductions allows children to create their own stories about 19th century school time and play time. Toys include iron puzzles, a cast iron bank, kaleidoscopes, and cloth and corn husk dolls.
School days can be recreated using a tin lunch pail, a slate, pen and ink for cursive writing practice, and a set of McGuffy readers. Reprints of an 1893 toy catalog, Victorian valentines, paper doll books, 19th century children's story books plus a variety of illustrated books on children's life in the 19th century complete the materials.
Mining in Nevada (3 trunks available)
A prospector's story and the hardships of the underground miner can be imagined using the objects and materials in this trunk. A burro's pack saddle, a gold pan, and a mining claim in a rusty tobacco tin can start students thinking about prospecting. A carbide lamp and a candle holder, the only light sources for early underground miners, show another side of mining life. Other tools are a pickax, a hammer and hard rock drill, and a crucible. Rocks and minerals can be studied using a pocket mineral guide, a magnifying glass, mineral specimens, and a Nevada Mining Association mineral kit. Laminated posters detail mining today and in the past.
Each trunk also includes:
1. A list of curriculum objectives which can be covered using the trunk contents;
2. Objects which can be handled by students;
3. A laminated photograph card with an explanation for each object;
4. Laminated historic photographs;
5. Laminated activity cards for students to do and learn;
6. Many books, readings, and some video materials.
No lesson plans are included.
