Second Grader Awarded Grand Prize!
Grant Bowler Elementary School in Logandale Wins the 2005 Mojave Max Emergence Contest

March 10, 2005

Second Grader Josephina Romero is the winner of the 2005 Mojave Max Emergence Contest.  She predicted the exact date and time that Mojave Max the desert tortoise would emerge in 2005.

Today at noon, Josephina was surprised with the announcement.  “We won the Mojave Max contest,” she exclaimed with a smile.

Mojave Max made his early debut on Feb. 14 at 11:55 a.m, predicting an early spring for Southern Nevada.  Clark County Commissioner Tom Collins, who represents the area, made the official announcement to the winner and the winning class in Logandale.

Juan Palma, district manager of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, presented Josephina with the grand prize: a field trip for her and her entire class to Mojave Max's habitat at the Red Rock National Conservation Area and a class pizza party, which will occur on May 12.

The winning student and her class also received Adventuredome passes, Mojave Max Olympic-style medals and Mojave Max t-shirts. Cathy Buchanan, the teacher of the winning student, will receive a new personal computer and a giant traveling trophy will be awarded to the school for one year.

Josephina Romero and Grant Bowler Elementary will also be recognized at the County Commission meeting on Mar.15.

“I’m glad to come out and see the cooperation among our school district, our local and federal governments and the community,” said Commissioner Tom Collins.
