Welcome to Willow Springs, a popular area for a quick picnic break. Although there is enough room for 150 visitors, large groups are asked to make reservations in advance.
Visitors can see Indian hand prints on the large sandstone rock as well as a large agave roasting pit to the right of this rock. The Willow Springs picnic area is unique because of this ancient agave roasting pit.

Agave Roasting Pit
The agave roasting pit looks like a large doughnut-shaped mound.
The Indians used limestone to line the fire pit to hold the heat; then they would roast tortoise, squirrel, rabbit, big horn sheep, and agave (a large artichoke looking plant). In three days, they would have a great feast.
Since limestone can only hold heat one time, the Indians would throw the used limestone rocks out of the pit.
They would toss the rocks over their shoulders causing the outside of the pit to look like a doughnut.
