This spring flows year round and provides water for plants like the Ponderosa Pine that do not thrive in a desert environment.

Lost Creek Canyon Children’s Discovery Trail is probably one of the most popular trails in the conservation area for a couple of reasons.  It is a good place to see the Big Horn Sheep and other wildlife, and it’s one of the shorter trails at Red Rock Canyon.  This trail takes you to a year round spring and a seasonal waterfall that flows after a rain storm or spring snow melt.  There are a lot of different plants along this trail including desert plants and plants that live by water.  A free booklet is available to students to explain things along this trail.

One-tenth of a mile from the start of the trail, you will see quite a different type of plant life in the wash due to the influence of water.  You will find the willow, scrub oak, Apache plume, and the tall Ponderosa Pine that normally grow at an elevation of 6,000 feet.

It’s hard to believe that this spring flows year round at the base of the mountain.  There is quite a diversity of wildlife in this unique environment.
